Iiiiit's another one of these lovelies that I get waaaaay too often:

And unlike most of these accounts, this one is completely blank:

Typically it'll have an Instagram username listed and a link to an Artstation account and both are filled with art that looks like something generated by KoboldAI or something like it of women with weird proportions and big tits and they all have the same faces and expressions and general look. There will also usually be a Discord username and their generic "I love making art for stories and reading books!" that is more or less the pitch they give you in their little private message.

Admittedly, dear reader, I am quite tired of this shit. It was fun when it was once in a blue moon but now it's multiple times a month.

Subject: Proposing an Art Collaboration

Hello Hikaru Yuy It's Liana! I'm a huge fan of your story Maybe He's Born With It I'd love to create some artwork inspired by it in my own style What do you think?

People complain about getting these all the fucking time on AO3 in their comments and I only get them in my FFN PMs lmao

(There are plenty of people getting them on FFN too.)

It's like these people are getting closer to Big Brain and even Galaxy Brain shit with these... I guess so that they come across as more believeable? But they're still not lmao they are still very much not.

Here are some things that just jump out at me okay

You have your "introduction": Hello Hikaru Yuy It's Liana!
I feel like this is a bit too...informal? Like an introduction to a Youtube video ("Hey guys, it's me!") like we are not friends we are not buddies I have never met you before in my life and you've never met me either so like. We are off to a janky start I feel.

We have for the first time ever a story title drop (!): I'm a huge fan of your story Maybe He's Born With It
Okay I wish I could say I was flattered but I know for a fact you've never even touched that story and just picked the most recent thing listed on my FFN profile which is something from August of 2015 and whilst yes I know there are plenty of people who read people's old and crusty things (I still get story alerts and favourite alerts for things on FFN and I get kudos for some old crusty Fire Emblem fics I wrote over a decade ago), in the fandom this particular fic is part of...you usually don't reach out to an author personally to tell them "hey I love this mouldy block of cheese you have here on a shelf!" you just...leave a comment maybe.

Which if you're actually such a huge fan of said story, you would've done, I would think. But you have not.

And instead of telling me why you're such a huge fan of the fic or idk telling me why you love it so much you...awkwardly segue right into the reason why you're really here in my Fanfiction.net private messages: ✨the sales pitch! *angelic choir*

It's always the same fucking pitch too: I'd love to create some artwork inspired by it in my own style.
As opposed to...Michelangelo's style? Like I don't get that part. I am not even prolific enough in any fandoms I run in these days to get people showering my messages with PLS CAN I CREATE ART FOR UR MASTERPIECE FANFIC OMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!?!?!?!111

(Wow you can tell how old I am.)

(Some random muscle I didn't know existed now aches.)

If I wanted art of my fics I have artists I can commission. Why would I accept some fucking rando in my PMs on a website I don't even visit anymore??

Aaaaand then let's end it with: What do you think?

I want to make it clear that I don't reply to any of these PMs they just rot in my inbox lol because they're not worth my time to respond to going "thanks but no thanks" considering how often I get things like this. I don't understand the point of bombarding a fuckton of writers like a goddamn spam email in the hopes of...what exactly? I wonder how many people actually legit respond to these...

And you and I both know it's probably not even actual art but some AI slop. If I wanted AI slop I could figure out how to do that myself no problem lol.

Anyway I would be more likely to believe these things if, you know, they actually told me things about the fic, what scenes they liked, etc. But they can't do that and I bet if they get closer to that Big Brain they will just either use some ChatGPT shit or go for something really, really, really generic. Which I would be even more insulted by tbh because I've gotten reviews on AO3 basically like that.

Funny enough only on my Gundam Wing fanfics. Hm. Wonder why that is.

OH WELL. It is a mystery to all and sundry I guess???

Maybe one day I will respond just like "okay so first of all why are you asking me this and second of all why did you pick me and my fic out of the gajillion on this hellsite I am just curious what your thought process is."

Eneaswriting (Registered User) left the following comment on broken crayons still colour:
Thank you for writing this. Although this is a stardew valley fanfic asjkdashkhdj i was having a really bad day, bc i trully relate to Farmer´s experience with her mother. You may have written this fic for comfort, fun, or even for catarsyc reasons. I want to let you know you have given all of that and so much relief to another person across the internet. Thank you :´)

Which of course I responded to:
I'm happy this fic helped comfort you and bring you relief! Thank you for reading it and leaving a comment. You have no idea how much reading something like this means to me, knowing that this fic I wrote for my own comfort helped someone else. Please take care <3

It was because I was going through my comments and replying to the ones I hadn't done so before that I found out the comment I talked about in this entry no longer existed. I don't know what happened, if it was the original commenter who deleted it or...what happened. But that kind of made me Press [X] to Doubt on whether it was a real comment or not. I don't know. Considering I've gotten hit with comments about AI and whatever multiple times before and my Gundam Wing fics seem to be big targets... Yeah. I dunno.

"What do you mean by 'comments about AI'?" I mean shit like this:
KoboldAI should stick to whatever it was originally programmed for because writing clearly isn't its strong suit.

ChatGPT's output is about as inspiring as watching paint dry. Step up your game.

And if you look at r/AO3 there's always like five posts a day where someone goes "omg a hate comment" and people go "no that's just someone shilling AI (like ChatGPT) in the strangest way possible." Because that's what they're doing, drawing attention to AI services like KoboldAI and ChatGPT. There was another comment that didn't advertise anything but was obviously written by AI and was so generic it could've been geared towards anything.

And this isn't an Archive of Our Own specific thing either... It happens on FFN as well. It doesn't accuse you of being AI or using AI for your writing but it's more "hey I would love to make some (AI) art of your writing"...as can be exhibited here (using PMs I actually got):

Subject: A valuable opportunity

Hey Hikaru,
I'm a concept artist inspired by your story and would love to bring it to life through art. I'd be thrilled to discuss how I can work up on your ideas.

and

Subject: Story compliments

Hello! I hope everything is going well for you. I recently read your story and was really impressed by your choice of words. I enjoyed it a lot! I'm a concept artist focusing on book covers and characters. Would you be interested to collaboration?

and

Subject: Reader honest thoughts

Hello Hikaru Yuy!
As a fellow reader I really admire your work! Your storytelling has truly inspired me. I'd love the chance to bring your stories to life with my art, and I'd be happy to work with a light touch of slighter amount. Is there a social media platform you prefer for connecting?

and finally

Subject: Merging our creative forces

Howdy,

As a fellow reader I really loved your work. Im inspired by your storytelling. I'd be honored to bring your characters to life through my art skills. Do you have a preferred social media platform for connecting if you're interested?

Notice they pretty much all say the same thing more or less just worded slightly different and they all talk about ~combining forces~ so that you, as a writer, can have art for your writing! But notice that they don't mention any particular work, it's just a general "I really like your work/writing!"

("But Karu, there are people who still use FFN??? When things like AO3 and even Wattpad are right there?"
Yes. FFN has been on life support for many, many years at this point and now it's more a haven for spambots and people trying to shill whatever AI than, you know, a place to showcase your fanfiction. AO3 at least attempts to take care of the problem and things are moderated; there is no moderation of FFN and I don't think there really ever was if I'm honest with you.)

so yeah. any time I get comments on my GW stuff I side-eye the shit out of it because...I get a lot of AI comments (either "accusing" me of using it for my writing or the comments are written by ChatGPT or whatever). I don't experience this in literally any other fandom I write for. Which is nuts. I've seen people who write in big fandoms like BNHA/MHA and OPM and whatever anime fandom get hit by this which makes sense. Those are big, active fandoms.

But Gundam Wing? A fandom for an almost 30 year old anime series?? Why?

I hate the internet.
omaewokorosu: (Default)
I decided to reboot my one Gundam Wing fic series because it's easier to do that then to go through almost 30 fics and rewrite them to make them compliant with all of the worldbuilding I've done. And if I'm gonna have to rewrite everything anyway, I might as well just start fresh.

(I rebooted Operation: PARENTING.)

I rewrote two of the fics before I'd decided on the reboot...so I updated them (which turned into half rewriting them) and updated the publishing dates because it's more or less new content anyway.

This version of Heero that I've been writing about and working on since 2018 hits a little closer to home than probably any iteration of any character I've ever written fanfic for and it gets to the point where I go, "Is this actually Heero or am I just writing an OC with a canonical's name?"

That sort of Imposter Syndrome I get at times. (I'm sure there are many who can relate to this feeling.)

The feedback I've always gotten on this version of Heero has always been positive and people like the way I write Heero simply because I make him seem...human. Flaws and all. He is a completely traumatised mess trying to get his shit together and grapple with all that life has to offer in a life post-Endless Waltz in a world that is at peace for the first time in...who knows how long... Where Heero is a war veteran and has lived about 5 different lifetimes in the span of like, 7 years. How do you deal with that? There is no "reintegrating" back into civilian life when Heero has never been a civilian. He needs to be integrated and that won't ever completely happen.

Today...I got a comment on one of the things I rewrote, which was a rewrite of a rewrite of the fic that started the entire fic series. It was written as proof that despite how fucked up and traumatised Heero is, he would still be a great father.

(Unlike how the fandom characterised him at the time, which made me go wtf. You really think, with your entire fucking body, that Heero would not only abuse his wife, but also his kids??)

Of course because AO3 has been hit by spambots in recent years shilling AI services disguised as legitimate comments ranging from positive to downright negative, I scrutinised whether this was even genuine. I've gotten hit by both types of spambots and it's to the point where they will register accounts in order to do this kind of shit so like. Unless they've gotten so much more sophisticated, it's likely a genuine comment. (Even though the commenter's profile is completely blank, I know for a fact there are people who have accounts just to leave comments and write on a different account.) It mentions fic details and it mentions characters by name (previous AI shill comments never did, they were largely very generic).

(I hate that I even have to fucking question whether the comments I get are left by actual fucking people but welcome to the AI Internet Hellscape, kids!)

The text in case you can't see the image:
Elsiefreya200 (Registered User) left the following comment on there will never be a father who loved his daughter more than i love you:
Your story does a great job of showing Heero Yuy’s emotional journey as he steps into fatherhood, moving from a past filled with destruction to a life of love and purpose. You skillfully combine personal growth with emotional depth, highlighting Heero’s inner conflict and his commitment to his family. The pacing keeps the reader hooked, while the dialogue and reflections reveal the evolution of his character. The way Relena and Heero’s relationship is portrayed adds an extra layer of depth to the story, making it truly moving. Overall, you create a powerful, heartfelt tale of redemption and new beginnings.

(And I'm probably going to continue wondering if it's real or fake too even though I found it's a psedu for an account that is for reading/commenting.)

ANYWAY my paranoia re: AI aside...

I guess I'm doing okay with how I write Heero because the whole point of this series is...more or less...personal and emotional growth. Heero finding his "normal" despite not knowing what that is and not being able to ever achieve 100% "normalcy".

I'll reply to the review later (I say, and then will forget for a week).

EDIT [02.02.25]: I am not entirely sure what happened but a few days ago I went to go respond to the review and it is...no longer there? I don't know if someone reported it as spam or if the original commenter who left it removed it. It still shows that they left kudos but it's...kind of weird! So I guess I won't be replying to it after all...
