I say "an idea for a Fire Emblem fic" but it's just an idea of how I can reboot My Sins Won't Leave Me because I do want to redo it so that it is not only better grammatically and structurally...but also better characterisation wise.

So what is the idea? Weeeell...

Meta on how I developed Marth pre-FE11. )

And bonus meta on the real reason I came back to Fire Emblem fandom.

It all started with a fic. )

I'll probably write moar meta later (I really am in the meta state of mind today), but I need foods before my stomach threatens to end my existence. So that will have to wait.

Also, Etzel has a monocle, and monocles are sexy.

This is referring to no fic in particular, just something I wanted to get off of my chest. I've probably mentioned this before as well.

What localisations you use in your own journal is your business, and quite frankly I don't care if you prefer 'Akaneia' to 'Archanea' or whatever. I still use Oguma instead of Ogma (mostly because the latter just doesn't sound right in my head). And though I would say that you shouldn't mix localisations (the NoA and the NoE versions of FE11, for instance), I use 'Macedon' instead of 'Medon' in like, all of my fics. ("My Sins Won't Leave Me" was the fic in which I realised that Medon was the American localisation. I blame the fact that I played the European version after playing the Japanese one.) But at least 'Medon' and 'Macedon' are technically both official names.

So what you use in your LJ is not my business. Hell, I really can't tell you what you can use in your fics, either.

This is less of an issue with, say, FE3, because it is Oguma and Sheeda and whatever. FE3 was never officially localised. (FE12 doesn't have one yet either, for that matter.) Even FE1 I can excuse it. If you're writing for FE11, though, it's Ogma and Caeda. Or Ogma and Shiida in Europe. Because it's got an official translation, so these names are official. Hell, you can even technically say that those are the official names period, and thus apply to FE1 and FE3.

But if you're writing for FE3 and tell me you're using the translation patch names (which is fine) and then stick with them for all of five seconds before going on to talk about 'Galder' and 'Talys' and then remember, "Oh yeah, Akaneia"? Especially when you just used Garda two sentences before? I am going to be confused. And suffer from mental whiplash. I am not saying this as someone who is used to the localisations, I am saying this as someone who wants some consistency. If you are going to use Akaneia and Garda, you should be using Talis. If you decide half way through the fic that you're using the official names, find and replace the old names or the official ones.

Because I don't know about anyone else--I can only speak for myself--but having gotten used to the official names, I have to let myself adjust and remember what is what in FE3 as compared to FE11 (Akaneia = Archanea, Orleans = Aurelis, etc.). It's like dipping your toe into the pool and slowly submerging yourself so you can allow yourself to adjust. Switching back and forth between them is like dipping your toe in the pool and then being thrown into the pool, and then being pulled out and toweled off, being allowed to adjust, and then the water goes from cool to blazing hot because suddenly you are in a hot tub.

Except this is going on in your brain.

I got into Marth's games through FE1. I am a stubborn bitch who vowed to never use those 'shitty localisation names'. I have been called elitist (for not using the names as a preference), I have been called a bitch, I have been accused of telling people to "get off of my turf", etc. etc. etc.

But if you are going to write something where half of it's been translated and half of it was remade/rebooted and translated, you have to pick which side you are taking and stick with it. For the love of butter, stick with it. It doesn't matter if you got into Archanea through FE1, FE3, or FE11 or 'prefer' a certain localisation (or switch, or mix them). If you're just posting things to your LJ where only a small amount of people can read it, I don't care. I probably don't read your LJ anyway for it to really matter, or I don't care because it's meta, or whatever. As I said before, I still use 'Oguma', and I still don't know how the fuck to spell 'Malledus' half the time (it usually ends up as 'Malledeus' and idk where that even came from), and just when I thought I've converted completely to the localisations, I always find another old name I use somewhere.

tl;dr: if you are going to write fic and decide to use a specific translation, at least be consistent. If you used Akaneia first, I expect Talis, Sheeda, Oguma, Jeigan, Gordon, Orleans, and Nina. And Aritia. If you use Akaneia once and start using Talys, Caeda, Jagen, et all, then find/replace and make it Archanea (because the rest are the majority and it's easier to change just one name). Have some consistency!

. . . For the record, I never used 'Aritia', but then again I came over from Smash Brothers fandom, where Melee translated it as 'Altea'. (They also used Dolua, and Pharae and Akaneia.) Oh noes, the horror.

Coming over from Smash Brothers fandom into FE fandom without a clue about either of them the latter fandom is an entirely different meta post though.
